The free Google Chrome browser is one of the most widely used on the Internet as of 2012. While there's a variety of available Google Chrome skins or themes, which alter the appearance of the browser, it's also possible to create your own theme without programming knowledge using free online theme makers. Creating a Chrome theme based on your company color scheme and logo can give all the computers at your business a uniform look.

Online Chrome Theme Creator

Navigate to the ChromeTheme website (see Resources) and click the 'Start' tab on the left of the screen.

Type a name for your theme in the Theme Name section and a short description of your theme in the Description section.

Click the 'Images' tab to bring up a list of components that make up the Chrome theme.

Click the 'Frame' option and then select a color for the frame or click 'Choose File' if you want to use your own image. If using your own image, it should be at list thirty pixels in height and in PNG or JPEG format. The width of the image doesn't matter, as it's tiled.

Click the 'Toolbar' option and then select a color for the section of the current tab and toolbar together, or click 'Choose File' if you want to use your own image. A custom image must be at least 120 pixels in height and in the JPEG or PNG format. The width of the image doesn't matter.

Click the 'Tab background' option and then select a color for tabs that are not active.

Click the 'New tab page background' option and then select a color for the background, or click 'Choose File' if you want to use your own image. This is the most visible area of the skin as it covers the entire background of a new tab that's opened. The size of the image doesn't matter, but for the best results match it to your desktop resolution.

Select 'No-repeat' from the 'Ntp_background_repeat' menu if you don't want the background image to be repeated (tiled). Select 'Repeat-x' to repeat the image across the x-axis (horizontally) or 'Repeat-y' if you want it repeated across the y-axis (vertically).

Select 'Center,' 'Left' or 'Right' from the 'Ntp_background_alignment' drop-down menu to choose how you want your background image to be aligned. A visual representation of the theme is shown on the right of the screen so that you can ensure that you align everything according to your own preferences.

Click the 'Frame overlay' option and select an image that appears at the top left of the browser frame. The image should be at least 40 pixels in height and in the PNG or JPEG format.

Click the 'New tab page attribution' option and select an image that will appear in the 'Theme created by' section of every new tab that's opened. This is the ideal spot to place your company or brand logo.

Click the 'Window control background' option and select an image to be used in the background for the window control buttons like closing or maximizing.

Click the 'Colors & Tints' tab at the top of the page. Select the colors and tints for buttons, text and frames according to your preferences. The display area on the right shows a real-time image of how your theme will look so use it as a visual guide.

Click the 'Start' tab and then click 'Pack and install theme' to apply it to your Chrome browser. Click 'Pack and download' theme to store it to your computer in CRX format. Click 'Pack and download zip file' to save the theme to your computer in a format that can be uploaded to the Chrome Web Store.

Chrome Theme Maker

1.

Navigate to the ChromeThemeMaker website (link in Resources) and click the 'Images' tab on the right side of the screen.

Click 'Select from gallery' for each of the theme options to pick a preset image from the supplied gallery or click 'Upload image' to use your own. Custom images must be in PNG or JPEG format. The frame images should be at least 30 pixels in height and the toolbar 120 pixels in height.

Select 'No-repeat' from the 'Background repeat' drop-down menu if you don't want the background image to be tiled. Select 'Repeat-x' to repeat the image across the x-axis (horizontally) or 'repeat-y' if you want it repeated across the y-axis (vertically).

Select 'Center,' 'Left' or 'Right' from the 'Background_alignment' drop-down menu to choose how you want your background image to be aligned. A visual representation of the theme is shown on the right of the screen so that you can ensure that you align everything according to your own preferences.

Click the 'Colors' tab at the top of the screen and then select the color that you prefer for each of the theme elements shown. Use the preview window on the right of the screen as a guide to how your theme will look with the colors you're selecting.

Click 'Apply Theme' to apply the theme to your Chrome browser or click 'Compile and Download' to save it to your computer.

My Chrome Theme

1.

Navigate to the Chrome Web Store (link in Resources) and click the 'Add to Chrome' button for the My Chrome Theme app.

2.

Click the 'Add' button when asked to confirm the installation of the new app.

3.

Click the 'Launch App' button once the application has finished downloading.

4.

Click the 'Start Making Theme' button in the new browser tab that opens.

5.

Click 'Upload Image' to select an image stored on your computer as the background for your theme. Click 'Use Webcam' to take a photo via your webcam and upload it as a background image.

6.

Click 'Adjust position' and then select either 'Fit to Screen,' 'Fill Screen' or 'Tile Image' depending on your personal preferences. Click 'Preview Mode' at the bottom of the screen to see a preview of how your theme will look when completed.

7.

Click 'Continue to Step 02' at the top of the screen. Click on the 'Toolbar,' 'Background tab' and 'Frame' pins to select a color for those elements.

8.

Click 'Continue to Step 03' at the top of the screen. Enter a name and description for your theme in the input boxes and then click 'Make my theme!'

9.

Click the 'Install My Theme' button to apply it to your Chrome Browser.
